BUDDY BRAY

Buddy Bray is co-author of the Cliburn in the Classroom programs and has been hosting the presentations in schools for over 17 years, and he says it is the most enjoyable work he does.

When he is not in the schools talking about music, Buddy serves as artistic director of the Cliburn at the Modern series and is the principal keyboardist for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. He also hosts the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s pre-concert discussion series, where he does much the same thing as in the schools—he tries to make his audience comfortable with the music they will hear, and he does it with a spirit of discovery and fun.

Buddy comes from a family of teachers, and he is glad to be carrying on the family tradition.

CHARLES YANG

Charles Yang, recipient of the 2018 Leonard Bernstein Award, has been described by The Boston Globe as an artist who “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rock star.” While rooted in the world of classical music, he is hardly confined to it, possessing crossover abilities as a violinist, electric violinist, and vocalist, which have led him to perform with a variety of artists all around the world. He’s also appeared at the YouTube Music Awards, TED, EG Conference, Google Zeitgeist, and onstage at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center’s Metropolitan Opera House, among many others.

Yang has performed in the presence of two former U.S. Presidents and the Queen of Denmark, and has shared the stage in collaborations with famous artists from all genres of music. His career has been followed by prominent news media, and he is featured in Nick Romeo’s book Driven and on the Discovery Channel’s Curiosity.

Charles is originally from Austin, Texas. On June 9, 2005, the Mayor of Austin presented Mr. Yang with his own “Charles Yang Day.”

PETER DUGAN

Pianist Peter Dugan is heard nationwide as the host of NPR’s beloved program From the Top. He has appeared as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician across North America and abroad. Prizing versatility as the key to the future of classical music, Mr. Dugan is equally at home in classical, jazz, and pop genres.

Mr. Dugan has performed in duos and trios with artists ranging from Itzhak Perlman and Renée Fleming to Jesse Colin Young and Glenn Close. The Wall Street Journal described his collaboration with violinist Charles Yang as a “classical-meets-rockstar duo.” Peter advocates the importance of music in the community and at all levels of society. As a founding creator of Operation Superpower, a superhero opera for children, he has travelled to dozens of schools in the greater New York area, performing for students and encouraging them to use their talents–their superpowers–for good.

Mr. Dugan holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The Juilliard School. He resides in New York City with his wife, mezzo-soprano Kara Dugan, and serves on the piano faculty at The Juilliard School Evening Division.

SARA DOAN

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Sara Doan began studying piano at the age of 3 with Donna Edwards. Under her tutelage, Sara won top prizes in several state and regional competitions. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in piano performance at the University of North Texas, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at TCU. Ms. Doan has has presented recitals across Texas, and in Oklahoma, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C, and has worked with a number of orchestras in the DFW area.

A dedicated music educator, Sara has served as collaborative pianist-in-residence at Southeastern Oklahoma State and adjunct professor of piano at the University of North Texas. She maintains a large, active private piano studio in the DFW area and is an adjunct professor at Tarrant County College Northwest Campus. Sara also presents lectures and educational programs through the Cliburn, Fort Worth Music Fund, and the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth.

 

JONATHAN TSAY

Jonathan Tsay began his piano studies at age 5 and has since developed a wide-ranging artistic career. A professor of piano at the University of Memphis, he also serves as artistic director of Ensemble75, a chamber music series in Dallas, and hosts the “Between the Barlines” podcast, which explores the lives of people in classical music. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician in Taiwan, Canada, and across the United States.

Jonathan serves as head of piano at the Chloé Trevor Music Academy and has been invited to judge many music competitions. He earned degrees from SMU and l’Université de Montréal, and in his spare time enjoys playing football and watching cartoons.

ARTINA MCCAIN

Artina McCain, has a built a three-fold career as a performer, educator and speaker, performing with many of the country’s greatest symphony orchestras and as a soloist in recital halls throughout the world. She has served on the faculty of numerous summer festivals including the Austin Chamber Music Festival, the Illinois Summer Youth Music, the Gateways Music Festival in Rochester, NY, and the Walled City Music International Piano Festival and Competition in Ireland. McCain graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University. She received her Master of Music from Cleveland Institute of Music and holds a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Currently, she is Assistant Professor of Piano and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis and Co-Founder/Director of the Memphis International Piano Festival and Competition.

GLORIA LIN

Pianist Gloria Lin enters her seventh year with the Cliburn’s education programs. She serves on the piano and musicology faculty of the TCU School of Music and has enjoyed an extensive performance career on four continents, including appearances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the United Nations. An active chamber musician, Gloria is a member of Caminos del Inka, performs with her husband, cellist Jesus Castro-Balbi, and is sought after as a collaborative pianist.

A prizewinner many times over, her educational background includes studies at The Juilliard School, Interlochen Arts Academy, University of Michigan, Manhattan School of Music, and Indiana University Bloomington.

RANDALL GOOSBY

Violinist Randall Mitsuo Goosby has appeared as guest soloist with numerous orchestras throughout the United States since winning First Prize at the Annual Sphinx Concerto Competition in 2010 at age 13. Shortly after winning, Randall was invited to appear as part of the New York Philharmonic’s prestigious Young People’s Concert series at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center. The New York Times raved that  “…his performance won him a deserved standing ovation for its sheer virtuosity” in his Carnegie Hall debut performance.

Randall received a full scholarship to The Juilliard School’s Pre-College program and has earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from Juilliard, and is now pursuing an Artist Diploma there. Randall has been featured on National Public Radio’s “From the Top,” and he has been honored as a Rising Star of the Stradivari Society. In addition to his concerts, Randall shares his love of music through community engagement programs for public schools, children’s hospitals, and music programs across the USA.

ZHU WANG

Praised for his “technical mastery and deep sense of lyricism,” pianist Zhu Wang was recently selected as one of three winners of the 2020 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. He has been recognized as an “excellent pianist with a natural sense of harmony and imagination,” whose sensitive and engaging performances exhibit a remarkable depth of musicianship and poise beyond his age.

Zhu has performed in recital and with orchestras across Europe, Asia, and North America, including at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. An active chamber musician and promoter of new music, Zhu premiered composer Timo Andres’s Moving Études in a national tour. A graduate of The Juilliard School, Zhu currently studies at the Curtis Institute of Music under Robert McDonald.

CORRIE DONOVAN

Soprano Corrie Donovan loves working with children through music and is excited to begin her eighth year with the Cliburn’s education programs. She was also the host for the first Cliburn Junior Competition in 2015 and teaches private voice through Northwest ISD.

Outside the classroom, Corrie enjoys a busy performance career, both in Texas and abroad; highlights include vocal workshops with Cirque du Soleil and a performance invitation from the former president of Mexico. Also an active musical arranger, she enjoys reimagining classical favorites and creating intimate concert experiences, taking her audiences on a journey to make meaningful connections with music.

BRIAN PERRY

Brian Perry is the newest member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra double bass section. Prior to his appointment in 2013, he was a member of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra for 9 years. He has appeared with the Minnesota Orchestra, National Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, and often performs with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood. An active collaborator, Brian has been a guest artist with pianist Buddy Bray for the Cliburn in the Classroom series, and has performed locally on the Spectrum Chamber Music, Fine Arts Chamber Players and Cliburn at the Modern series, among others.

Brian earned his music degrees from Boston University and the University of North Texas. In addition to playing regularly with the DSO, Brian is also an adjunct professor of double bass at the SMU Meadows School of Music. Committed to educating and mentoring young musicians, he has presented masterclasses for the International Society of Bassists convention and the TCU Bass Fest, and since 2010 has been the double bass instructor at the highly-acclaimed Boston University Tanglewood Institute, one of the nation’s premier summer orchestral training programs for high-school students.

Brian currently resides in Fort Worth with his wife Kathryn, a Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra violinist, and their two daughters.

KENNY BROBERG

American pianist Kenny Broberg first came to international attention when he captured the silver medal at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Since that time, the Minnesota native has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia to share his music.

The first musician in his family, Kenny started piano lessons at age 6, when he was first fascinated by his mother’s upright—a wedding gift from her parents. He studied privately for nine years before entering the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 2016. He currently lives in Parkville, Missouri, continuing his studies with 2001 Cliburn Gold Medalist Stanislav Ioudenitch at Park University. A hockey and baseball athlete in high school, Kenny still enjoys watching and playing sports, in addition to listening to jazz, composing music, and reading.

FEI-FEI

Finalist at the 2013 Cliburn Competition and winner of the 2014 Concert Artists Guild Competition, Fei-Fei has established a reputation for bringing “passion, piquancy, and tenderness” to performances throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

Recent collaborations include a tour of Spain with the New York Youth Symphony; an artist residency with the Baden-Baden Philharmonic; education initiatives across her home country of China; a concerto with the Costa Rica National Symphony Orchestra; and chamber music both with her trio, the Aletheia Piano Trio, and as part of The Inner Voices project. 

Currently living in New York, Fei-Fei is now working towards her Doctorate of Musical Arts under the guidance of esteemed pianist Yefim Bronfman. During the pandemic, she has also been sharing #songsofcomfort from home, on her Facebook and YouTube pages. feifeipiano.com

TESSA LARK

Grammy®-nominated violinist Tessa Lark is a budding superstar in the realm of classical music, as well as a highly-acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Performances have taken her to the most prestigious venues and musical festivals around the world.

Tessa’s belief in using music to foster global connections and community across boundaries manifests in her genre-defying collaborations with other string players, composers, and a jazz guitarist. She is also the co-host and creative director for NPR’s From the Top, a program dedicated to showcasing young and influential classical musicians.

A graduate of the New England Conservatory and The Julliard School, Ms. Lark has won top prizes at a number of string competitions and has been awarded several artistic fellowships and career grants. She plays a 1600 G. P. Maggini violin on loan from an anonymous donor through the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

BRIDGET KIBBEY

Called the “Yo-Yo Ma of the harp,” by Vogue magazine, Bridget Kibbey is in demand for her innovative, virtuosic performances that expand the expressive range of the harp. Collaborating with some of today’s top artists, she crosses genres to emphasize the harp’s role through centuries and cultures of music. The New York Times has remarked that “…she made it seem as though her instrument had been waiting all its life to explode with the gorgeous colors and energetic figures she was getting from it.”

Winner of many grants and numerous awards with her instrument, Bridget Kibbey has performed as a soloist and chamber musician at some of the most prestigious music festivals in the world. With the harp as her muse, she is sought after for her interesting and unusual programs and currently tours several projects of her own conception. 

The piece performed in this episode is from her program Bach to Brazil, which highlights the Nuevo Latino luminaries living in New York City, as well as the folk masters that inspired them, in a mash-up of newly-commissioned works and selections from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and more.

MEHRDAD GHOLAMI

Iranian flutist Mehrdad Gholami recently completed his doctoral degree in flute performance at TCU. He has served as principal flute with the Tehran Symphony Orchestra, is a prize winner of several solo and chamber music competitions, and was recipient of Iran’s National Concours of Arts at 18 years old.

From an early age, he played with many contemporary ensembles and worked with Iranian and American composers to premiere over 60 new works. He has appeared in recordings ranging from contemporary classical to world to pop music. Mehrdad is passionate about education; he teaches private lessons in Fort Worth and serves as the coordinator for the Fort Worth Youth Orchestra’s chamber music program.

KEVIN GUNTER

Kevin Gunter serves on the piano faculty at Southern Methodist University in a unique hybrid position, working with graduates, undergraduates, children, and adults. He is also co-director of the annual SMU Institute for Young Pianists, and he hosts a weekly master class for adults in the SMU Lifelong Learning Program.

Mr. Gunter is also an active musical director, conductor, and keyboardist in the Dallas musical theatre scene, having given hundreds of performances, including regional and world premieres, with acclaim from The Dallas Morning News, The Dallas Observer, Dallas Voice, and many others. He has garnered praise for his ability to “steal the show with terrific, toe-tapping music” (BroadwayWorld), as well as his “expertly conducted” performances and “sweet keyboard” (TheatreJones).

Mr. Gunter presented his solo lecture, “Trending Now: Your Future with Adult Students” at the 2019 Music Teachers National Association Conference in Spokane, Washington, and is published in the MTNA e-Journal. His students are active as well, performing in events far and wide such as the Brancaleoni International Music Festival in Italy, the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Chicago, and the Interlochen Music Festival in Michigan.

SHIV YAJNIK

Dallas native Shiv Yajnik began playing the piano at about four years old. Since that time, the now 19-year-old pianist has already participated in numerous competitions, masterclasses, and has given recitals and concerto performances all over the DFW Metroplex.

A long-time student of Cliburn Competition competitor Alex McDonald, Shiv has performed at the Basically Beethoven Festival, as well as the Oberlin Summer Piano Festival, Indiana University Piano Academy, and the Young Composers Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music, among others. He has won numerous awards at competitions including the Dallas Music Teacher’s Association Jazz/Pop Contest, Dallas Solo Competition, Dallas Piano Festival Competition Senior Concerto Division, Texas Music Teacher’s Association State Piano Competition, and MTNA National Composition Competition.

Outside of practice room, Shiv is an avid young composer, and also enjoys studying science and math, swimming, and reading.

DANIELA LIEBMAN

18-year-old Mexican pianist Daniela Liebman has rapidly established herself as an artist of eloquence, poise, and nuance. Since her debut at age 8 with the Aguascalientes Symphony, Daniela has performed with more than 25 orchestras on four continents, and has given recitals at some of the best venues all over the world.

In 2016 and 2017, when Daniela was fourteen and fifteen years old, respectively, she was named one of the “40 Most Creative Mexicans in the World” by Forbes Mexico. In 2018, Daniela was again named one of Forbes Mexico’s “100 Most Creative and Powerful Women,” and was invited to Forbes’ reveal of its 2018 edition of Creativos Mexicanos, celebrating extraordinary Mexican leaders in the arts. She has been interviewed by Amy Poehler’s “Smart Girls,” is featured in GQ Mexico and Vanity Fair, and is the recipient of Mexico’s 2014 Nacional Premio de Juventud.

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Daniela began piano studies at age 5, and currently studies with Dr. Tamás Ungár at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. Committed to sharing her love of music with others, Daniela frequently participates in talkbacks and workshops with piano students of all ages and backgrounds. Her dedication to celebrating her heritage through creative programming is reflected in her musical and cultural ambassadorship. Aside from practicing, Daniela enjoys films, reading, biking, and trying different cuisines.

Pianist Gloria Lin enters her seventh year with the Cliburn’s education programs. She serves on the piano and musicology faculty of the TCU School of Music and has enjoyed an extensive performance career on four continents, including appearances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the United Nations. An active chamber musician, Gloria is a member of Caminos del Inka, performs with her husband, cellist Jesus Castro-Balbi, and is sought after as a collaborative pianist.

A prizewinner many times over, her educational background includes studies at The Juilliard School, Interlochen Arts Academy, University of Michigan, Manhattan School of Music, and Indiana University Bloomington.

SARA DOAN

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Sara Doan began studying piano at the age of 3 with Donna Edwards. Under her tutelage, Sara won top prizes in several state and regional competitions. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in piano performance at the University of North Texas, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at TCU. Ms. Doan has has presented recitals across Texas, and in Oklahoma, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C, and has worked with a number of orchestras in the DFW area.

A dedicated music educator, Sara has served as collaborative pianist-in-residence at Southeastern Oklahoma State and adjunct professor of piano at the University of North Texas. She maintains a large, active private piano studio in the DFW area and is an adjunct professor at Tarrant County College Northwest Campus. Sara also presents lectures and educational programs through the Cliburn, Fort Worth Music Fund, and the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth.

CORRIE DONOVAN

Soprano Corrie Donovan loves working with children through music and is excited to begin her eighth year with the Cliburn’s education programs. She was also the host for the first Cliburn Junior Competition in 2015 and teaches private voice through Northwest ISD.

Outside the classroom, Corrie enjoys a busy performance career, both in Texas and abroad; highlights include vocal workshops with Cirque du Soleil and a performance invitation from the former president of Mexico. Also an active musical arranger, she enjoys reimagining classical favorites and creating intimate concert experiences, taking her audiences on a journey to make meaningful connections with music.
