FEATURED ARTISTS

BUDDY BRAY

Buddy Bray is co-author of the Cliburn in the Classroom programs and has been hosting the presentations in schools for over 17 years, and he says it is the most enjoyable work he does.

When he is not in the schools talking about music, Buddy serves as artistic director of the Cliburn at the Modern series and is the principal keyboardist for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. He also hosts the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s pre-concert discussion series, where he does much the same thing as in the schools—he tries to make his audience comfortable with the music they will hear, and he does it with a spirit of discovery and fun.

Buddy comes from a family of teachers, and he is glad to be carrying on the family tradition.

RICHARD LAABS

Originally from Allen, Texas, Richard Laabs is a guitarist and teacher currently living in Spicewood, near Austin. He began playing guitar in high school ensembles and with his friends, and he continued his musical education at Texas Lutheran University, where he studied classical guitar and music education.

Richard has been teaching since his graduation in 2015. He loves his job as elementary music teacher at Walnut Creek Elementary in Austin, where he enjoys creating new songs to play and sing with his students. In his free time Richard is an avid songwriter, composer, and collaborator, and also plays guitar in and around the city.

EVAN MITCHELL

Pianist Evan Mitchell has given over 250 performances for the Cliburn’s education programs over the past eight years, in addition to teaching privately and at Tarrant County College and serving as a chamber music coach for the Fort Worth Youth Orchestra. He also maintains an active performance career, having appeared in ten countries on four continents, including with the Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras, the Fort Worth Opera, and Texas Winds.

A passionate advocate for the arts, Evan looks constantly for ways to reach new audiences and to inspire a love for music. He holds degrees from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and TCU, and has won first prize at several competitions.
