ABOUT FEI-FEI
2013 Cliburn Finalist

Praised for her “bountiful gifts and passionate immersion into the music she touches” (The Plain Dealer), pianist Fei-Fei is a winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition and finalist at the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. She continues to build an international reputation for her poetic interpretations, charming audiences with her “passion, piquancy and tenderness” and “winning stage presence” (Dallas Morning News).

Fei-Fei’s concert tours have taken her across the globe in concerto performances, recitals, and chamber music collaborations alike. Recent projects include artist-in-residence with the Baden-Baden Philharmonic with touring in Germany, a Carnegie Hall performance and tour of Spain with the New York Youth Symphony, debut at Lincoln Center with the Pegasus Orchestra, a 19-city tour of China with her Aletheia Piano Trio, and performances of lesser-represented repertoire such as concertos by Leroy Anderson, Florence Price, Clara Schumann, and Xiaogang Ye. Deeply committed to sharing her joy for music and connecting with communities, she also engages students and community audiences through frequent school and outreach activities.

Born in Shenzhen, Fei-Fei began piano lessons at the age of 5. She is a graduate of The Juilliard School where she studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky, and is currently pursuing a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree with pianist Yefim Bronfman at the Manhattan School of Music. Fei-Fei is also a member of the piano faculty at John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University and teaching associate of pianist Yefim Bronfman at the Manhattan School of Music beginning in Fall 2023.

“There is an overriding joy in their music-making. Couple that with incredible technical abilities, ensemble second to none, and… a true sense of theatrical entertainment, and you have a positive look at the future of classical music performance.” – American Record Guide

Known for their adrenalized performances, original compositions, and notorious music videos, Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy Roe are revolutionizing the piano duo experience. Described as “the most dynamic duo of this generation” (San Francisco Classical Voice), “rock stars of the classical music world” (Miami Herald), and “the very model of complete 21st-century musicians” (The Washington Post), the Anderson & Roe Piano Duo just celebrated 20 years of doing their part to make classical music a relevant and powerful force around the world. Their five critically acclaimed albums have spent dozens of weeks at the top of the Billboard Classical Charts, while their Emmy-nominated, self-produced music videos have been viewed by millions on YouTube and at international film festivals. They’ve toured extensively worldwide as recitalists and orchestral soloists; appeared on NPR, MTV, PBS, and the BBC; presented at numerous international leader symposiums; and served as hosts of From the Top.

And they’re absolute Cliburn Family favorites, as concert artists and as on-air webcast hosts for three Cliburn competitions. They’ll be back here for two energetic, unforgettable nights this season.

GABRIELA MONTERO, piano

“Montero’s playing has everything: crackling rhythmic brio, subtle shadings, steely power in climactic moments, soulful lyricism in the ruminative passages and, best of all, unsentimental expressivity.” — The New York Times

When awarding her the 2023 Performance Today Classical Woman of the Year, American Public Media noted that Gabriela Montero is “a soulful artist at the piano, bringing out the beauty and humanity in a wide range of music, and a fervent composer of music that speaks to the joy and tumult of our times.”

Performances have taken her to many of the world’s most prestigious halls and orchestras. An award-winning recording artist and composer, she has combined the two, to outstanding results: her 2015 release, which includes her own Ex Patria and Improvisations, won the Latin Grammy® for Best Classical Album. And she is a strong and eloquent champion for the people of her native Venezuela, often using the power of her gifts of composition and improvisation as a tool of creative dissent; her advocacy has earned recognition from the Human Rights Foundation, Beethoven Academy, and Amnesty International.

Now she returns to Cliburn Concerts for her first appearance in almost 15 years. And she’ll be a closer part of the Cliburn Family very soon, as she joins the jury for the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and has been commissioned to write an original work to be performed by all 30 competitors in the Preliminary Round!

When “one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists” (Gramophone) performs with a seminal pianist who “ranks among the small handful of performers in every generation whose abilities defy the imagination” (Toronto Star), the result is nothing short of magic.

Canadian cellist Johannes Moser won silver at the 2002 International Tchaikovsky Competition and has since had a phenomenal touring career, from soloing with the New York, Los Angeles, and BBC Philharmonics, as well as the orchestras of Chicago, London, Tokyo NHK, and Bayerischen Rundfunks, to chamber appearances with the likes of Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Midori, and Menahem Pressler. He’s also a prolific recording artist and a champion of new music who is heavily involved in commissioning.

Which makes this match-up all the better: Marc-André Hamelin is not only a pianist known worldwide for his unrivaled blend of consummate musicianship and brilliant technique who has performed wide-ranging repertoire in the world’s great halls, he is a well-known composer with more than 30 pieces to his name, including the commissioned work for the 2017 Cliburn Competition (where he was also a juror). His discography spans more than 70 recordings which have earned him 11 Grammy® nominations, seven Juno Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the German Record Critics’ Association.

This March, Johannes makes his Cliburn Concerts debut alongside Marc-André, a stalwart member of the Cliburn Family, with works by Debussy and Franck, as well as Nadia Boulanger and Hamelin himself.

Maria & Stanislav Ioudenitch, violin & piano

“Growing up in a house where the walls danced from the sounds of two pianists practicing, fate has it that I am a violinist.” When she was 3 years old, Maria Ioudenitch’s pianist parents, Stanislav and Tatiana, handed her a tiny violin, and her love for music began.

The following year, she came to Fort Worth to witness her father’s dedication to his instrument come to fruition when Stanislav Ioudenitch took home gold in the 2001 Cliburn Competition. And she certainly has followed in his footsteps, recently winning several international violin competitions and securing a recording contract with Warner Classics. Keeping it all in the Cliburn Family, her first release with the label in March 2023, Songbird, was a collaboration with Kenny Broberg, 2017 Cliburn silver medalist and longtime student of Stanislav—one of the most sought-after teachers today, as well as an in-demand touring artist.

Don’t miss this truly family affair, as father and daughter unite with an all-French program of Ravel, Boulanger, Poulenc, and Franck at the Kimbell, as well as an intimate, casual concert at The Post.

Jake Heggie, composer & piano

“Arguably the world’s most popular 21st-century opera and art song composer” – The Wall Street Journal

Composer Jake Heggie is best known for the operas Dead Man Walking, Moby-Dick, It’s a Wonderful Life, Three Decembers, Two Remain, and If I Were You.  His 10th full-length opera, Intelligence, made its debut with the Houston Grand Opera this Fall, and he is currently at work on new works for violinist Joshua Bell, New Century Chamber Orchestra, the Miró Quartet, and Music of Remembrance. The operas and his nearly 300 art songs have been performed extensively on five continents, championed by some of the world’s most beloved artists. With a libretto by the late Terrence McNally, Dead Man Walking has become “the most celebrated American opera of the 21st century” (Chicago Tribune). It has received nearly 80 international productions since its San Francisco Opera premiere in 2000.

And this season, one of the most iconic living American composers makes his first Cliburn Concerts appearance in 15 years, in a dynamic evening at the Kimbell, featuring performances of his works by vocalists of the Fort Worth Opera (as well as the composer himself) and an insightful conversation with the Cliburn’s Buddy Bray.
