March 25, 2024

The Cliburn is proud welcome back renowned pianist and composer Gabriela Montero for two concerts this April: first, Cliburn Concerts on Thursday April 25, 2024, at the Kimbell Art Museum Renzo Piano Pavilion (3333 Camp Bowie Blvd.); followed by Cliburn Sessions, the Cliburn’s classically alternative club series, at Tulips FTW (112 St. Louis Ave.) on Friday, April 26, 2024. Cliburn Sessions was previously scheduled to take place at The Post at River East; all tickets purchased for the previously scheduled venue will be honored, and no action is required.

For her Kimbell performance, Gabriela will perform pieces by Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and Rachmaninov, in addition to improvised score to Charlie Chaplin’s 1917 silent classic The Immigrant, while the film plays on the big screen.

For her Tulips performance, Gabriela will perform a selection of classical and improvised pieces to be announced from the stage.

When awarding her the 2023 Performance Today Classical Woman of the Year, American Public Media noted that Gabriela Montero is “a soulful artist at the piano, bringing out the beauty and humanity in a wide range of music, and a fervent composer of music that speaks to the joy and tumult of our times.”

Performances have taken her to many of the world’s most prestigious halls and orchestras. An award-winning recording artist and composer, she has combined the two, to outstanding results: her 2015 release, which includes her own Ex Patria and Improvisations, won the Latin Grammy® for Best Classical Album. And she is a powerful and eloquent champion for the people of her native Venezuela, often using the power of her gifts of composition and improvisation as a tool of creative dissent; her advocacy has earned recognition from the Human Rights Foundation, Beethoven Academy, and Amnesty International.

Now she returns to Cliburn Concerts for her first appearance in almost 15 years.

In addition to her Cliburn Concerts appearance, Gabriela will serve on the jury of the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and has been commissioned to compose a new work for the Competition, to be performed by all 30 competitors. This marks the third time that the composer of the commissioned work will also serve on the jury.

ABOUT CLIBURN SESSIONS
Cliburn Sessions was established in 2014, and presents classically trained artists in a relaxed environment, where they are free to blend genres and interact with the audience. The intimate, casual setting allows for a unique showcase of talent outside of the traditional recital experience.

The venue for the May 10 Cliburn Sessions performance with the Anderson & Roe Piano Duo will be announced at a later date.
