Over the past three days (June 2–4), 30 competitors each performed a 40-minute recital—which included the commissioned work, Fanfare Toccata, by Sir Stephen Hough—during the Preliminary Round at Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU. Hundreds of patrons watched in person, along with the jury, as a large audience joined from around the globe via the Competition’s live, fully produced webcast. Full details of the webcast and schedule can be found at cliburn.org/2022-webcast.

Using a simple yes/no/maybe voting system, the jury narrowed the field of 30 to 18. Each juror submitted a list of 18 competitors that he or she selected to advance, along with a list of “maybes” (used in the event of tied scores). The “yes” votes were tabulated, and the top 18 vote-getters advanced.

In the Quarterfinal Round, each of the 18 quarterfinalists will play a recital not to exceed 40 minutes in length, with a program made up of works chosen by the competitor. A competitor’s program may not repeat any pieces from his or her Preliminary Round recital.

At the end of the Quarterfinal Round performances, 12 competitors will be chosen to advance to the Semifinal Round, which will run June 8–12 at Bass Performance Hall. The semifinalists will be announced late in the evening on June 6.
