FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Application

Q: What is the new application submission deadline?

A: Applications are currently open and must be submitted no later than October 14, 2021. To begin an application, click here. Please note that following application submission, an automatic recommendation email request will be sent to the first two recommenders listed in the application. Recommendations must be submitted no later than November 1, 2021. 

Q: I have already started an application for the 2021 Competition. Will a different application be used for the 2022 Competition?

A: No. The same application will be used for the 2022 Competition; you may continue to complete your existing application form.

Q: I submitted an application for the 2021 Competition. May I make changes to my application?

A: Yes. Your application has been reopened in Acceptd, which will allow you to revise all elements, including your repertoire and video submission. The application will remain open and editable until you wish to resubmit, no later than the October 14, 2021 deadline.

Q: May I use recordings I prepared for the 2021 Competition application as part of my application for the 2022 Competition?

A: Yes. Application videos may be recorded up to 12 months prior to the application submission date. For example, a video recorded on September 15, 2020 may be included in an application submitted prior to September 15, 2021.

Eligibility

Q: I would have been 17 years of age at the start date of the 2021 Competition, but will turn 18 prior to the start date of the 2022 Competition. Am I eligible?

A: Yes. For the 2022 Competition, applicants must have been born after June 12, 1990, and on or before June 2, 2004.

Q: I would have been 30 years of age at the end date of the 2021 Competition, but will turn 31 prior to the end date of the 2022 Competition. Am I eligible?

A: Yes. Applicants eligible for the 2021 Competition will retain their eligibility. For the 2022 Competition, applicants must have been born after June 12, 1990, and on or before June 2, 2004.

Rounds and Repertoire

Q: Have there been any changes to the Screening Auditions?

A: Screening Auditions will take place in Fort Worth, Texas from March 6–12, 2022, and will retain the previously announced format. No more than 72 applicants will be invited to give a 25-minute recital before a live audience and the Screening Jury. Travel and accommodations for applicants invited to the Screening Auditions will be provided by the Cliburn.

Q: Have there been any changes to Competition rounds?

A: No. The format of all Competition rounds will remain unchanged.

Q: Have there been any changes to Competition repertoire requirements?

A: No. All rules, requirements, and procedures relating to Competition repertoire will remain unchanged.

Artistic Collaborators

Q: Have there been any changes to the Jury, Screening Jury, or conductors?

A: Yes, renowned pianist Alessio Bax will join the esteemed jury, chaired by conductor Marin Alsop. Complete jury information is available here. Bax replaces Paul Lewis due to a scheduling conflict with the rescheduled Competition dates.
