Fort Worth, Texas, September 24, 2010:

The Juilliard String Quartet will make its first appearance in Cliburn Concerts history on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, 7:30 p.m. at Bass Performance Hall during a year of touring that has included Alice Tully Hall, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, as well as many other venues in North America and Europe. This is also the Metroplex debut of the Quartet with new first violinist Nick Eanet, the third leader in the 60-year history of the group.

Called "the quintessential American quartet" by the Houston Chronicle, the Quartet has garnered raves from critics for bringing the varied music styles of their personalities and experiences together in a mix that appeals to any palate. "The Juilliards brought a depth of tone and a wealth of inflection that suited the music exceedingly well," wrote the San Francisco Classical Voice. "There is a complexity of texture in a group with a history as long and layered as this one's. You can hear, as it were, the generations mingling; it's a little like being able to pick out the individual spices in a sauce while also tasting the blend as a blend."

Their program includes works by Haydn, Brahms, and the Texas premiere of Grammy® Award winning composer Joan Tower's Rising, with guest artist Carol Wincenc. The winner of  the 1978 Naumburg Flute Competition, Carol Wincenc remains one of the world's most celebrated flutists. The New York Times describes her as "an impeccable flute soloist."

In 2009-2010, Ms. Wincenc commissioned and performed six new works for the flute.  Rising was composed for the joint forces of the Juilliard String Quartet and Ms. Wincenc and will be the centerpiece of the program. The world premiere took place March 31, 2010, at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater in The Juilliard School at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The Cliburn Concerts engagement will be just the second performance of this work outside of New York City.

Tickets range from $15 to $90 and are available online at Cliburn.org and by calling 800.462.7979. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more by emailing groupsales@cliburn.org.
