Van Cliburn Foundation announces 157 young pianists from 37
countries accepted to audition in the Worldwide Screening Recitals
for the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano
Competition
Screening recitals will be held in China, Germany, Russia,
Switzerland, and the United States January and February 2009
The 30 pianists selected to participate in the competition will be
named on March 5, 2009
FORT WORTH, TEXAS, December 9, 2008--157 pianists from an applicant
pool of 225 have been chosen by the Van Cliburn Foundation to
perform screening audition recitals for the opportunity to compete
in the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, to
be held May 22 through June 7, 2009, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Hailing from 37 countries, including Australia, China, Italy,
Japan, Germany, Russia, South Korea, and the United States, the
pianists, all of whom are between the ages of 18 and 30, will each
give a 40-minute recital at audition sites around the world. To
create a natural concert setting, all recitals are free and open to
the public, and each pianist may perform repertoire of his/her
choice. The recitals will be held from mid-January through late
February 2009, in Shanghai, China; Hannover, Germany; St.
Petersburg, Russia; Lugano, Switzerland; and in the United States
in New York, New York and Fort Worth, Texas. A five- member jury
panel, who are also members of the Cliburn 2009 competition jury,
will attend all recitals and then select the final 30
competitors.
The pianists were chosen based on written applications, which
included proof of recent performances, prizes and awards, concert
reviews, letters of recommendation from internationally recognized
teachers and musicians, active repertoire lists, and personal
statements.
The Cliburn Competition stands apart from many of its international
counterparts, in that it offers its winners more than just a cash
prize, medal, and recording opportunities. All six competition
winners receive an unparalleled opportunity to perform throughout
the United States, sharing three years of managed concert tours and
more than 300 pre- arranged concert engagements valued at over
$1,000,000 in combined performance fees. The gold medalist is
offered additional concert engagements in Europe and Asia, in
conjunction with IMG Artists, Europe.
All Cliburn competitors will have the experience of performing in
Fort Worth's Bass Performance Hall--one of the country's premier
concert venues. Further, they will receive extraordinary media
exposure as they play before a worldwide audience, via live and
on-demand Internet streaming.
As one applicant reflected in the personal statement, "Among the
many existing small and large competitions, only a few stand out as
having the ability to bestow these advantages which can change and
positively affect the path a young pianist takes...Surely, this
competition could help to broaden my horizons, and help me pave the
path of my professional career as a performing artist..."
When announcing the pianists selected for the recitals, Cliburn
president Richard Rodzinski remarked: "The level of experience of
the pianists who have applied this year clearly demonstrates that
the Cliburn Competition's main purpose--that of opening doors and
launching careers--has been well communicated. Their past number of
recitals and orchestral appearances, as well as size of repertoire
and top prizes garnered in other distinguished competitions,
including the Chopin and Tchaikovsky, offer ample evidence of their
preparedness to fulfill the many engagements arranged by the
Cliburn. The level of artistry of each applicant was further
confirmed through nearly 100 telephone conversations worldwide
directly with their teachers and other musicians. There is little
doubt that following the screening recitals we shall have assembled
one of the most astounding gatherings of talent ever presented on
the Bass Performance Hall stage in Fort Worth."
One applicant's statement summed up yet another important aspect of
the competition: "Regardless of the final result, it would be a
great honor to participate...Even performing in the Preliminary
Round, which is broadcast over the Internet, can yield new
opportunities for a pianist. One must not forget that the most
important thing for a musician is to be immersed in the right
atmosphere, to be surrounded by fellow artists of the highest
caliber. The spirit of the event is what excites me the
most."
