Fort Worth, Texas, October 23, 2012-The Cliburn presents the Brentano String Quartet, the string quartet for the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at Bass Performance Hall in its Cliburn at the Bass series with a program including: PURCELL Selected Fantasias; BARTÓK String Quartet No. 4; HAYDN String Quartet in D Minor, Op. 42, Hob. III: 43; BRAHMS String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 51, No. 2.

Colleagues, critics, and audiences across the globe have hailed the Brentano String Quartet for their "glittering clarity" (The Strad) and "startling musical revelations" (The Guardian). Within a few years of its formation, the Quartet garnered the first Cleveland Quartet Award and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award; and in 1996 the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center invited them to be the inaugural members of Chamber Music Society Two, a program that has become a coveted distinction for chamber groups and individuals.

Alann Sampson, interim president and CEO, is pleased to present this esteemed Quartet in North Texas stating: "The Cliburn is full of anticipation as we introduce the Brentano String Quartet to Fort Worth in November. The Quartet is known for exquisite music-making and richness of sound that come together for a riveting and memorable performance. The members are also acclaimed collaborators, working with young performers and renowned artists. It will be exciting to see the music they create with each of the 12 semifinalists at the Fourteenth Competition in May 2013."

The Brentano String Quartet will make their competition debut in the Semifinal Round of the Fourteenth Competition along side each semifinalist. Mark Steinberg of the quartet says: "It is fitting that, in a contest as serious and respected as the Cliburn Competition, each successful contestant must show himself equal to this challenge. We in the Brentano String Quartet are honored to be asked to participate in this event, and we look forward to making music with a group of talented young pianists who we are sure will offer a huge range of styles and personalities." The Quartet will perform chamber music with each semifinalist, June 1-4, 2013.

Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. "Passionate, uninhibited, and spellbinding," raves the London Independent; the New York Times extols its "luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism."

The Quartet has performed in the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York; the Library of Congress in Washington; the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; the Konzerthaus in Vienna; Suntory Hall in Tokyo; and the Sydney Opera House. The Quartet had its first European tour in 1997, and was honored in the United Kingdom with the Royal Philharmonic Award for Most Outstanding Debut. That debut recital was at London's Wigmore Hall, and the Quartet has continued its warm relationship with the Wigmore, appearing there regularly and serving as the hall's quartet-in-residence in the 2000-01 season. The Quartet has been invited to collaborate and perform with the semifinalists in the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2013.

The Brentano Quartet has performed many musical works pre-dating the string quartet as a medium, among them madrigals of Gesualdo, fantasias of Purcell, and secular vocal works of Josquin. Also, the Quartet has worked closely with some of the most important composers of our time, among them Elliot Carter, Charles Wuorinen, Chou Wen-chung, Steven Mackey, Bruce Adolphe, and György Kurtág. The Quartet has been privileged to collaborate with such artists as soprano Jessye Norman, pianist Richard Goode, and pianist Mitsuko Uchida. The Quartet enjoys an especially close relationship with Ms. Uchida, appearing with her on stages in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

The Quartet has recently released a recording of late Beethoven on Aeon Records. Their other Aeon recording was of Mozart, consisting of the K. 464 Quartet and the K. 593 Quintet, with violist Hsin-Yun Huang. The Quartet has also recorded the Opus 71 Quartets of Haydn. In the area of newer music, the Quartet has released a disc of the music of Steven Mackey on Albany Records and has also recorded the music of Bruce Adolphe, Chou Wen-chung, and Charles Wuorinen. A forthcoming release on Aeon will feature the Beethoven Quartets Opp. 127 and 131.

The Brentano Quartet became the first Resident Quartet at Princeton University in 1999. The Quartet is named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven's "Immortal Beloved," the intended recipient of his famous love confession.
