The Cliburn, a quadrennial event, will be held for the thirteenth time May 22-June 7 at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas. Some 225 young pianists from around the world applied to the competition, and were then whittled down to just over 150 (representing thirty-seven countries) who participated in the worldwide screening audition recitals, held in Shanghai, China; Hannover, Germany; St. Petersburg, Russia; Lugano, Switzerland; and in the United States in New York, New York and Fort Worth, Texas, during January and February. Thirty of these pianists were invited to compete in the Cliburn 2009.
The competition consists of three rounds. Each artist will perform a fifty-minute program over five days and ten sessions in the Preliminary Round, May 22-May 26. Twelve musicians will progress to the Semifinal Round, May 28-31, where in addition to sixty-minute recitals, audiences will hear them perform piano quintets with the one of today's preeminent ensembles, the Takács Quartet, over a four-day, eight-session round. The Semifinal Round's recitals will also include each competitor's choice of one of several new works provided by the Foundation from its American Composers Invitational initiative. Just six of these young artists will advance to the Final Round, June 3-7, where they will perform two concerti with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, led by world-renowned conductor Maestro James Conlon; each one will also play an additional fifty-minute recital. The winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on June 7.
