Steve Claunch, chief technician for Steinway Hall, Dallas, prepares the Cliburn's grand piano for a new school year. The piano will be transported into 125 schools throughout the 2012-2013 school year for the Cliburn's signature education program, Musical Awakenings®.  Mr. Claunch has been tuning pianos for over 40 years.  He says that most pianos need to be tuned about once every year, however the Musical Awakenings piano gets tuned 2-4 times each year due to the over 7,000 miles it will travel moving in and out of schools.  It is remarkable that this piano doesn't need to be tuned more often; surprisingly it is not the moving of the piano that causes it to be out of tune.  The change in weather is the most likely cause of a piano to be out of tune, Texas's changes in humidity is especially hard on the piano.
