Cliburn Competition

Screening Auditions in... New York, New York!

2013 Cliburn Competition : Screening Auditions in... New York, New York!
Screening Auditions in... New York, New York!

The journey continues…

After Hong Kong, Hannover, Moscow, and Milan, the final two cities of the Screening Auditions are New York and Fort Worth.

132 candidates were invited to participate in the Screening Auditions. So far we have heard 72 candidates; now we have 52 more candidates to go--32 in NY, 20 in Fort Worth, plus 4 candidates on DVD. 4 candidates withdrew from the auditions for a total of 132.

The candidates who we will listen to on DVD had problems with transportion or illness, and we could not reschedule them in the timeframe available to us.

We have to understand that when pianists choose their course of study, they first choose a teacher, and after that they consider whether or not to move to another country. (This is why the schools try to attract the best teachers!)

The choice of the cities for our auditions was based on where we can find the best candidates, the best schools, and the best teachers.

We are constantly evaluating which cities will be best for our auditions. Naturally, there are some cities which cannot be overlooked--Fort Worth, NewYork, and Moscow are among them.

The Cliburn pays for the travel (up to $350 par candidate) from their city to a Screening Audition city. Ideally, we could go to more cities, but it becomes a question of cost and also the availability of the five eminent members of the screening jury.

Souvenir de voyage: I've had the chance to visit many cities in my life, but this is only my second time in New York City…  I enjoy the city, the walking, the energy, and the networking here. We were able to plan meetings with agents and presenters, as well as our sponsor Steinway & Sons while here.

Quote of the day: "If I'd lived in Roman times, I'd have lived in Rome. Where else? Today America is the Roman Empire, and New York is Rome itself."
John Lennon, John Lennon in His Own Words

Food of the day: So far, two Italian restaurants! What I like about New York (and big cities generally) is having late dinners!
