Screening Auditions
From the 167 applications received by the Cliburn, 132 pianists were selected to be heard in live audition recitals for the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, held in six locations: Hong Kong, Moscow, Hannover, Milan, New York, and Fort Worth. Applicants who were unable to be scheduled in the public concerts were screened in Fort Worth via DVDs. The jury included: John Giordano (chairman), Andrea Bonatta, Richard Dyer, Yoheved Kaplinsky, and Blanca Uribe.

Each applicant performed a 40-minute recital that was free and open to the public. The choice of repertoire was permitted to be drawn from works offered for the Preliminary and Semifinal Round recitals.

Preliminary Round
Thirty competitors have been invited to participate in the Fourteenth Cliburn Competition.

The Preliminary Round will be held in two phases, with each phase consisting of a recital not to exceed 45 minutes in length of works chosen by the pianist.

Semifinal Round
Twelve competitors will be chosen by the jury as semifinalists of the Competition.

The Semifinal Round will be held in two phases. Phase I will consist of a recital not to exceed 60 minutes in length of works chosen by the pianist, including the commissioned work. In Phase II each pianist will perform a quintet with the Brentano String Quartet chosen from works by Brahms, Dvořák, Franck, and Schumann. With a wide-ranging repertoire that encompasses the entire two-century catalogue of traditional quartet music, the Brentano String Quartet has distinguished itself as one of the world's foremost chamber ensembles.

Final Round
Six competitors will be chosen by the jury as finalists of the Competition.

Each pianist will perform two concerti of their choice, the first will be a chamber concerto chosen from works by Beethoven and Mozart, the second will be any concerto scored for full symphony orchestra and piano.

Both concerti will be performed with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra whose world-class musicians have become known for outstanding performances of symphonic and pops music with a wide range of talented artists. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra has joined every finalist of every Cliburn Competition onstage to share in these moving and definitive moments, and, in 2013, they will perform under the baton of internationally-acclaimed American conductor Leonard Slatkin for the first time. Maestro Slatkin has led virtually all of the major orchestras in the United States and around the globe. He has been said to be brilliant, not only in his conducting, but also in his ability to educate.

Award Ceremony
The medalists and other prize winners of the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be announced during an Award Ceremony at Bass Performance Hall on June 9, 2013.
